Mastering is often necessary in the launching of a new audio product. This is when final tweaking and touch-ups are made: volume leveling between plays, pauses between plays, final order of the plays, frequency equalization and finally the general leveling of the album. Of course, these steps are not required for all products.

It is always according to the work done during the crucial stage of the multi tracking mix done at the studio. Mastering is done right after, on 2 tracks only (right and left).
